Dr. Sudhir Parikh: A Life of Healing, Advocacy, and Service

A physician, philanthropist, media entrepreneur, and political advocate, Dr. Sudhir Parikh has spent over five decades building bridges between communities, nations and generations. From his humble beginnings in Gujarat, India, to becoming one of the most influential Indian Americans in the United States, his journey is one of tireless dedication to medicine, public service and cultural empowerment.

Early Life and Education in India

Born on December 28, 1946, in Petlad, Gujarat, India, Sudhir Parikh was raised in a family that valued education, integrity, and public service. His father, a government sales tax officer and trained attorney, and his mother, a high school graduate–a rare achievement for women in 1920s India–instilled in their five children a deep respect for learning and hard work. Four of the five siblings became doctors and one became an engineer, a testament to the family’s academic ethos.

Dr. Parikh’s maternal grandfather, also an attorney, served as the mayor of Petlad for two decades, while his paternal uncles held prominent positions in banking and business. This environment of civic engagement and professional excellence shaped Sudhir’s aspirations from an early age.

He earned his medical degree (MBBS) from B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad and completed his postgraduate training in pediatrics. However, his ambitions extended beyond India. In 1971, after completing his residency, he chose to go to the United Kingdom, encouraged by a World Health Organization consultant who had been impressed by his work in immunization programs.

Medical Training in the UK and the US

In the UK, Dr. Parikh secured a prestigious residency at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, one of the oldest and most respected medical institutions in the world. He was the only Asian doctor among 600 staff members, a distinction he regards with humility and pride. His time at St. Bart’s deepened his clinical expertise and broadened his global perspective.

In 1975, Dr. Parikh moved to the United States, where he joined St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City, a Columbia University-affiliated institution. Thanks to his UK credentials, he was allowed to skip the first year of residency, completing it in two years instead of the usual three. He then pursued a fellowship in allergy, asthma, and immunology at New York Medical College’s Metropolitan Hospital.

Building a Medical Empire

In 1980, Dr. Parikh opened his first private practice in Hoboken, New Jersey. At the time, he was the only board-certified allergist in Hudson County. His practice flourished quickly, and he soon began expanding. Demonstrating entrepreneurial foresight, he wrote to senior allergists across New York and New Jersey, offering to acquire their practices while allowing them to continue working under his management.

This strategy proved highly successful. Over the next four decades, Dr. Parikh built the largest privately, individually owned allergy, asthma, and immunology network on the East Coast. Today, his medical group includes 24 practices across New York and New Jersey, staffed by over 350 professionals, including physicians, nurses, and administrative personnel. His clinics serve more than 1,000 patients daily and conduct clinical trials for major pharmaceutical companies, including COVID-19 vaccine research.

Despite his vast responsibilities, Dr. Parikh has maintained a hands-on approach, emphasizing ethical practice and patient care. Many of his employees have been with him for over 20 years, a testament to his leadership and integrity.

Philanthropy and Global Health

Dr. Parikh’s commitment to service extends far beyond his medical practice. He has been a lifelong philanthropist, supporting healthcare, education, and disaster relief efforts in both the United States and India.

As a founding member and senior advisor of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), and as President of the Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (GAPIO), he has played a pivotal role in uniting over 1.5 million Indian-origin physicians across 57 countries. Under his leadership, these organizations have conducted continuing medical education programs, organized medical missions, and provided critical support during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the pandemic, Dr. Parikh helped coordinate the donation of $45 million worth of medical supplies to India. He also participated in vaccine trials and supported public health initiatives through his media platforms.

Through his NGO, Life Global USA, and in partnership with Project Life Gujarat, Dr. Parikh has spearheaded numerous initiatives in India, including:

  • Building 108 rural primary schools
  • Organizing blood donation and thalassemia screening drives
  • Promoting women’s self-employment
  • Conducting health and wellness programs
  • Supporting environmental efforts like tree planting

He has also been involved with organizations such as the Akshaya Patra Foundation, Ekal Vidyalaya, Share and Care Foundation, and the Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation, all of which focus on education, nutrition, and healthcare for underserved populations.

Media and Cultural Advocacy

In 2008, recognizing the need for a unified voice for the Indian American community, Dr. Parikh founded Parikh Worldwide Media (PWM). His goal was to empower the second generation of Indian Americans and promote a positive image of India in the West.

PWM includes:

  • ITV Gold, a 24/7 television channel with a reach of over 30 million viewers
  • News India Times, Desi Talk New York, and Desi Talk Chicago–English-language weekly newspapers
  • Gujarat Times, a Gujarati-language publication
  • S.-India Global Review, a policy journal targeting American lawmakers and thought leaders

PWM also has a state-of-the-art production studio and auditorium in Edison, New Jersey, which hosts cultural events, interviews, and performances. The media group has become a vital platform for promoting Indian culture, celebrating religious diversity, and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Dr. Parikh’s media work has been instrumental in shaping public opinion, influencing policymakers, and connecting the Indian diaspora with their heritage. His efforts have been recognized by leaders in both the United States and India, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Political Engagement and U.S.-India Relations

Dr. Parikh has been a tireless advocate for stronger U.S.-India relations. As President of the Indian American Forum for Political Education, he helped establish the India Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Friends of India Caucus in the Senate. These bipartisan groups have played a crucial role in advancing diplomatic, economic, and strategic ties between the two nations.

He has worked closely with influential American politicians. His advocacy was instrumental in garnering support for the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement during the George W. Bush administration. Dr. Parikh has also accompanied Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama on official visits to India and collaborated with President Clinton on earthquake relief efforts in Gujarat, raising $50 million for reconstruction.

Dr. Parikh’s contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including:

Legacy and Vision

Dr. Parikh’s life is guided by a simple yet profound philosophy: “Never forget where you came from, and always give back.” From arriving in the U.S. with just eight dollars to becoming a nationally recognized leader, he has never lost sight of his roots or his responsibility to others.

He continues to mentor young professionals, support community initiatives, and advocate for policies that benefit both the U.S. and India. His children, both physicians, have followed in his footsteps, combining medical excellence with social responsibility. Through his medical empire, philanthropic endeavors, and media outreach, Dr. Sudhir Parikh has created a legacy that transcends borders and generations.
